Counseling FAQs

How long are counseling sessions?

On average, sessions will be 50-55 minutes in length. 30 minute sessions and 90 minute sessions are offered as well, depending on need.

How much does counseling cost?

Private-pay sessions range from $80 to $130 per 50-55 minute session.
If you are utilizing insurance, this will depend on your insurance benefits. Prior to the first session, Mindful Counseling will verify your benefits and provide you your out of pocket cost per session.

How often do I need to be seen?

It is highly recommend that you attend counseling on a weekly basis. Being seen weekly, especially initially, will help us establish a comfortable, working relationship and set a foundation for where you are and where you want to be in regards to your goals for counseling. Once you experience improvement and can maintain your positive changes, Mindful Counseling can most likely recommend decreasing the frequency of your sessions. If you cannot be seen on a weekly basis, Mindful Counseling will encourage meeting weekly for the first 3 to 4 sessions and then moving to bi-weekly.

How long does the counseling process take?

Here at Mindful Counseling, we believe counseling will take as long as it takes. You definitely have control over your time in counseling but every person’s progress is so unique and individualized that I do not like giving a time frame on the process. On average, most clients attend for a minimum of 6 to 8 sessions. Many continue on, identifying revised goals or new goals. Others simply need additional time to meet their goals. We can discuss your unique experience more in depth after an initial session.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you have to cancel or reschedule your appointment, Mindful Counseling will need 24 hours advance notice. This is to allow others an opportunity to be seen. If you cancel within the 24 hour window, you are charged a late cancel fee of $65. If you no show (we are not alerted of you missing ahead of time), you are charged the full fee of the session.

I want to bring my teen into see you. Am I a part of his/her/their therapy?

As a parent, we rely heavily on your input concerning your child. We believe parents are the experts on their own children and you are invaluable to the process. Initially, we would request that we will sit down with you for a parent consultation (30 to 40 minutes in length) to discuss your concerns and desires regarding your child. After this, we would spend the majority of our time with your child while still meeting with you, as the parent, at the beginning of each session or every other session depending on progress (in the duration of 10 to 15 minutes).

I see the letters “LPC” and “LPC Associate”. What do those mean, exactly?

LPC stands for Licensed Professional Counselor. The National Board of Certified Counselors uses this term to identify counselors who are fully licensed. As LPCs, our counselors have completed a Master’s degree in Counseling and passed the National Counseling Exam for Licensure and Certification. They have also obtained over 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience.

A Licensed Professional Counselor Associate holds a provisional license to conduct professional counseling while under the clinical supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S). As LPC-Interns, our counselors have completed a Master’s degree in Counseling, passed the National Counseling Exam for Licensure and Certification, and are in the process of completing the final requirement of 3,000 professional counseling hours required by the State Board to obtain full licensure.

Additionally, all of our counselors completed their education through CACREP accredited programs. “CACREP accreditation provides recognition that the content and quality of the program has been evaluated and meets or exceeds national standards set by the profession.” See the CACREP website for more information.

If you still have questions concerning the terms LPC or LPC Associate, feel free to reach out! We will be happy to clarify and get you connected to a counselor who is a best fit for your needs.
